We have leased the garden behind the school playground since 2004 and had a fantastic opportunity to buy it and create a better resource for pupils and teachers.
Our plans
The garden was redesigned by parents, who are trained landscapers and gardeners, to create a fun, colourful space. for everyone to enjoy and benefit from.
Our new garden
It is low maintenance, accessible all year round and ideal for school projects and lessons. For example, the special Grasse Deck steps can act as a theatre seating area for class assemblies and performances.
Gardening Club is growing potatoes, kale, broad beans and sweetcorn, and planning a greenhouse. Another bed is specifically for tactile and scented plants, such as lambs’ ears and lavender. The bench around the water feature attracts children who just want to sit and chat, while those who want to play love the boat and Wendy house.
The new garden is a work of art in more ways than one. Mrs Lim, our art teacher, has painted a tree on one wall and the ‘leaves’ are circular plaques featuring the names of every donor. Unicorn’s former and current pottery teachers were responsible for producing these together with a larger commemorative plaque.
We raised £150,000
We raised £150,000 to fund the purchase and redesign. Our thanks to everyone for digging deep and helping our garden plans bloom.
