What is the Unicorn School committee?
The School Committee is one of the most visible expressions of the community spirit that runs through life at Unicorn. It is a parent-led group that organises social and charitable events throughout the year, raises funds for the school’s chosen charities and the bursary fund, and helps new families feel at home from the moment they join.
Being a rep on the School Committee is a great way to get to know others and understand how the school operates. Each class has two or three reps and the Committee, headed by the Chair or Chairs, meets once a term.
What does being a school committee rep involve?
The role does not require a major time commitment. It is primarily about being a point of contact for your class, passing on information, and helping events run smoothly. Many parents find it one of the most rewarding things they do during their time at Unicorn.
What events does the school committee organise?
The committee organises and runs social, charitable and other non-curricular school activities throughout the year, including:
- Autumn: Farmer’s market, Harvest Festival assembly and distribution of food, Christmas Fair, juniors’ carol concert, children’s Christmas parties and various cake sales.
- Spring: Main fundraising event — which could be a quiz or auction evening — juniors’ and infants’ discos, and various cake sales.
- Summer: Summer Fair, move night, second hand uniform sale and various cake sales.
The Christmas Fair is always a highlight of the Unicorn calendar. The school hall and playground are transformed with festive stalls, Santa’s Grotto, arts and crafts, secret santa, chocolate tombola, disco room and singing from the parent choir. The Spring fundraiser, whether a quiz, comedy night or auction dinner, is a popular occasion for the parent community to come together for a fun evening and support the school’s chosen causes.
How Does the Committee Raise Funds?
The committee raises money in support of the school’s chosen charities along with the school bursary fund. Fundraising is woven into the social fabric of the school year, events that are fun for children and parents alike also raise monies for causes the school genuinely cares about.
