As the leaves turn to shades of amber and gold and the crisp autumn air fills the playground, our children’s adventures in nature take on a special kind of magic. At Unicorn, we believe that every season offers new opportunities for exploration and learning and autumn is perhaps the most captivating of all.
A season for discovery
Each week, our Nursery and Reception children pull on their wellies and waterproofs and set off to Forest School, ready to discover the wonders of the natural world. The rustle of leaves beneath their feet, the sparkle of dew on cobwebs, and the excitement of spotting a squirrel gathering acorns – these simple moments inspire curiosity and wonder.
Forest School sessions give our pupils the freedom to explore, imagine, and investigate. Whether they’re building dens, creating natural art with fallen leaves, or listening to the rhythmic sounds of the forest, our children are not only developing key early skills but also forming a deep, lifelong connection with the outdoors.
Learning beyond the classroom
Outdoor learning encourages confidence, resilience, and teamwork. As children climb over logs or balance along fallen branches, they test their limits and learn to assess risks safely. Through shared adventures, the children build friendships and learn to communicate, problem-solve, and celebrate success together.
A natural treasure on our doorstep – Kew Gardens
We are fortunate to be located directly opposite the world-renowned Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew – an incredible resource that our school uses regularly to enrich our outdoor learning. From exploring the towering trees of the Arboretum to discovering exotic plants in the glasshouses, our pupils gain first-hand experiences that deepen their understanding of the natural world. These visits complement our Forest School adventures perfectly, connecting our children to the beauty and biodiversity of nature both near and far.
The power of play in nature
Unstructured play in natural settings allows children to be inventive and creative. Without the constraints of plastic toys or screens, they transform sticks into wands, leaves into crowns, and muddy puddles into oceans to cross. This kind of imaginative play builds not just motor skills, but also emotional intelligence and empathy, qualities that form the heart of a well-rounded education.
Rooted in our community
Being a prep school located in the beautiful surroundings of Richmond, and just moments from Kew Gardens, our school is perfectly placed to make the most of nearby green spaces and woodlands. We’re proud to be part of a community that values sustainability and outdoor education. By helping children connect with nature early in life, we’re nurturing a generation who will grow up with a love for the environment and an understanding of their role in protecting it.
An invitation to explore
At Unicorn, every child’s adventure begins with curiosity and we’re privileged to see how those small moments of wonder can blossom into a lifelong love of learning. Autumn may be fleeting, but the memories made beneath those golden trees will last a lifetime.
