About Unicorn

Founded in 1970, Unicorn is a thriving and highly regarded co-educational prep school for children aged 3 – 11, set within a beautiful Victorian villa opposite Kew Gardens.
At the heart of our philosophy is a strong commitment to academic rigour, delivered within a broad and stimulating curriculum. We are unapologetically ambitious for our pupils, fostering intellectual curiosity, a love of learning and the confidence to think independently, while ensuring that each child is known and supported as an individual. Alongside academic excellence, we place great importance on developing resilience, adaptability and the enduring values of kindness and compassion, equipping our pupils not only for the next stage of their education, but for life beyond the classroom.

Children are encouraged to explore and excel across all areas of school life, whether in the classroom, the arts or on the sports field, discovering their strengths and developing a genuine sense of purpose. This holistic approach is reflected in our consistently excellent results and in the wide range of leading day and boarding schools to which our pupils go on to.

Step into the garden

Step into the garden and you’ll discover the Coach House, home to our nursery and reception classes, thoughtfully designed to support our youngest learners. There is a light and spacious art room on the upper floor and at the far end of the garden we have 4 sound-proofed music pods for both class teaching and individual lessons.

The large astroturf playground is filled with colourful equipment, providing a perfect space for children to play and explore.

Our classrooms

Class sizes are small of usually no more than 22 children with many subjects being taught in half classes by specialist teachers.  All classrooms enjoy abundant natural light, state-of-the-art equipment and are named after the colours of the rainbow.  We have dedicated library, science and computer rooms in the main building and a dedicated art room in the Coach House.

Good Schools Guide

“Still, words like unicorn and rainbow can be misleading – this is not a fluffy, cuddly academic vacuum, but a serious place of learning and development.”
