At Unicorn School, Remembrance Day is a time when our whole community comes together in reflection and gratitude. It offers an important opportunity for our children to learn about the significance of remembrance, honour those who have served, and think deeply about peace and kindness in our world today.
In the days leading up to Remembrance Day, our classrooms were filled with creativity and colour as children painted beautiful canvasses of poppies, made delicate lanterns, each decorated with poppies and containing a tealight. When lit, these lanterns gave a warm glow that filled our classrooms with a sense of calm and reflection. In addition, our Reception children worked collaboratively to create large paper poppies, which were made into a wreath that now adorns our front door. All of the beautiful pieces remind us daily of the importance of remembering and showing our thanks.
The highlight of our commemoration was a very moving assembly led by our Year 6 pupils. Through thoughtful readings, poems, and reflections, they captured the true spirit of Remembrance Day. Their words encouraged everyone to pause, think, and appreciate the courage and sacrifices made by so many.
We are immensely proud of how the children marked this important day – with respect, empathy, and creativity. Their understanding and thoughtfulness remind us that remembrance is not just about looking back, but also about looking forward with hope.
Lest we forget.
