Reception curriculum

In Reception, your child will follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, which sets the standards for their learning, development, and care.

The areas of learning in Reception are divided into three prime areas:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

And four specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

In both Nursery and Reception, play is a vital part of your child’s development. Most learning is introduced through a carefully planned mix of play-based activities and some adult-led, focused sessions. Don’t be concerned if your child says they’ve been playing all day — this means they’ve had the benefit of skilled staff who make learning fun and engaging.

As the Reception year progresses, learning will gradually become more structured in preparation for Year 1 and the National Curriculum.
